Cardinal of Canada was founded by Russian immigrant Sam Ray in 1938. Drawing inspiration from the pioneering spirit of Canada, the old world charm of Montreal, and exacting traditions of European craftsmanship, Sam set out to create the most luxurious and meticulously crafted cashmere topcoat– eponymous with style, comfort and warmth.
By 1960, Cardinal of Canada became renowned for its cashmere coats as Sam continued to innovate with cashmere fabric. At the same time, while other apparel makers moved towards machine made construction, Sam refused to compromise on quality and continued to preserve such time intensive tailoring steps as canvas basted lining and setting sleeves by hand. These are the very same details that prevail in our overcoat styles such as the Saint-Pierre and the Saint-Paul to this day.
Sam’s son, Michael, continued in his father’s footsteps and introduced Cardinal of Canada to a wider audience at luxury stores in the US. Today, the brand is carried at select specialty and fine department stores
Devoted to preserving endangered hand tailoring traditions as well as adapting new technologies, Rocky Zhou formed a partnership with members of the Ray family in 2007, ensuring that Cardinal of Canada’s commitment to craftsmanship and quality perseveres.
In 2017, Cardinal of Canada launched a fine-tailored sport coat collection, now available at fine select retail stores and online.
